Hypothyroidism
Please note that the following does not replace medical or nutritional advice from a healthcare professional.
Hypothyroidism is treated with hormone replacement therapy – a medication called levothyroxine.
There is no specific diet for hypothyroidism or food that should be included or excluded to improve thyroid function.
If you suffer from hypothyroidism due to low iodine, iodine supplementation may be beneficial but the more common cause of hypothyroidism in the western world is actually Hashimoto’s, which is an autoimmune disease. If you have Hashimoto’s it’s actually better to avoid supplemental iodine.
There is a myth that people with hypothyroidism should avoid foods such as cruciferous vegetables and soy products but there is no scientific justification to do so.
You should only take into consideration that it’s better to avoid eating soy products proximal to taking your thyroid medication.
