Fatty Liver Disease
Please note that the following does not replace medical or nutritional advice from a healthcare professional.
A nutrient-dense, whole food diet rich in fiber, protein, antioxidants and unsaturated fats is generally recommended for people with non-alcoholic fatty liver. Foods to reach for include whole grains, non-starchy vegetables, beans, legumes, soy foods, nuts and nut butters, whole fruit, seeds, and healthy fats like avocado and olive oil.
Vegetables and fruits, especially berries, contain powerful antioxidants, as do coffee, green tea, and garlic. Avoid saturated fats (found in animal foods), and limit fried foods, baked goods, candy, fruit juices, sugar-sweetened beverages and alcohol.
Weight loss, if needed, can also be helpful in reducing fat inside the liver. Aim to lose no more than 2 pounds a week, as losing too much weight at once can actually make things worse.
Exercise is also important. Try to do aerobic exercise for 30-60 minutes five times a week, and strength training two to three days a week.
